Dengue cases raised in Warangal in Telangana

Dengue cases raised in Warangal in Telangana:

In recent days, government-run hospitals in regions like Mulugu, particularly in the former Warangal district, have been experiencing a significant influx of patients suffering from dengue, malaria, and viral fever.

Official records indicate that a total of 12 individuals have lost their lives due to dengue, with 10 fatalities in Mulugu and two in the Hanamkonda district.

With the reduction in rainfall, stagnant water and garbage have accumulated in drainage canals, leading to the overflow of contaminated water in various neighborhoods and on streets, thereby facilitating the spread of these contagious diseases.

The primary reasons attributed to the sharp increase in the mosquito population are inadequate sanitation practices, ongoing construction work on drainage systems, and the failure to maintain cleanliness in vacant urban plots.

Mulugu district is home to 17 Primary Health Centers (PHCs), all of which are currently witnessing a substantial influx of patients experiencing various health issues. Government hospitals are receiving between 80 to 120 fever patients daily.

Health officials at Eturnagaram PHC, like Sambaiah, have reported collecting blood samples from patients displaying dengue and malaria symptoms, subsequently sending them to MGM Hospital for testing.

Many government hospitals in the former Warangal district lack essential dengue testing kits and facilities required for conducting blood platelet count tests and ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay) tests for diagnosing dengue fever.

Hospitals located in rural and agency areas are referring patients to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital for ELISA tests. Dr. V. Chandrasekhar, the Superintendent of MGM Hospital, mentioned that they have prepared around 300 beds and have equipped themselves with ventilators and oxygen cylinders for potential emergencies. If necessary, they will increase the number of beds.

Presently, approximately 182 patients are receiving treatment at MGM Hospital, including 28 dengue cases, seven malaria cases, and 147 cases of seasonal fever.

Patients seeking consultation at private hospitals are required to spend between Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 for dengue fever tests.

Simultaneously, the district administration, in collaboration with the medical, health, and municipal departments, is on high alert and is implementing various preventive measures to control the dengue outbreak. Tragically, a contract worker from the Malaria department, identified as Yerra Raju (43), lost his life due to suffocation while conducting mosquito fogging in an under-construction apartment in Waddepally, Hanamkonda district.

ChatGPT Diagnoses Toddler’s Chronic Pain After 17 Doctors Couldn’t Over 3 Years

In an unusual case, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, successfully diagnosed a 4-year-old boy’s chronic pain condition in the United States after 17 doctors failed to do so over a three-year period.

The boy, Alex, began experiencing pain and severe meltdowns during the COVID-19 lockdown when he was 4 years old, which were temporarily relieved with painkillers. His condition was accompanied by symptoms such as chewing objects, stunted growth, imbalances between his left and right sides, worsening headaches, and extreme fatigue.

Despite consulting 17 different doctors, including dentists, pediatricians, and neurologists over the course of three years, none of them could provide a diagnosis for his symptoms.

Frustrated by the lack of answers, Alex’s mother, Courtney, turned to ChatGPT. She meticulously entered Alex’s medical information into the system, hoping to uncover a diagnosis. One specific detail, Alex’s inability to sit crisscross applesauce, stood out to her as potentially indicative of a structural issue.

To her surprise, ChatGPT suggested that Alex might have tethered cord syndrome, which made sense to Courtney. Seeking further validation, she joined a Facebook group for families with similar experiences, finding that their stories closely resembled Alex’s.

Eventually, a new neurosurgeon confirmed ChatGPT‘s diagnosis by examining Alex’s MRI images and identifying occult spina bifida, along with the tethered spinal cord.

Tethered cord syndrome occurs when spinal cord tissue forms attachments that restrict its movement, leading to abnormal stretching. It is often associated with spina bifida, a birth defect characterized by incomplete spinal cord development and exposed nerves.

This case highlights the potential of chatbots like ChatGPT to assist healthcare providers in diagnosing medical conditions and communicating with patients effectively. Research has shown that chatbots can provide accurate diagnoses up to 72% of the time, although they still have limitations, including accuracy and potential biases.

NIV Teams Head to Kerala for Bangladesh Variant Nipah:

Teams from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune are on their way to Kerala to establish a mobile laboratory at Kozhikode Medical College for Nipah testing and bat surveys. The move follows the confirmation of Nipah infection in four individuals in Kozhikode district.

The State Health Minister, Veena George, disclosed in the assembly that the Virus strain observed in Kerala is the Bangladesh variant, which is transmissible from human to human and has a high mortality rate, although it is less contagious. Additionally, epidemiologists from Chennai will join the efforts.

Furthermore, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has agreed to supply the necessary monoclonal antibodies for virus patient treatment.

George outlined various measures taken by the Health Department to contain the spread of the Nipah virus, including surveillance, contact tracing, categorization of risk levels, isolation facilities, containment zones, and medication procurement from ICMR.

During the assembly session, opposition leaders emphasized the need for updated Nipah treatment protocols and better data collection and training for healthcare workers. The Health Minister explained that the state’s labs can confirm Nipah but lack permission to declare cases, a prerogative held by (NIV) National Institute of Virology, Pune.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted the capabilities of the Institute of Advanced Virology at Thonnakkal and questioned why samples were not sent there for testing. George reiterated that the existing treatment protocols, issued in 2018 during the previous Nipah outbreak and updated in 2021, have not raised concerns, but changes would be made if necessary.

The Health Minister assured effective contact tracing and containment efforts, designating seven village panchayats in Kozhikode district as containment zones. Vijayan urged the public to follow health and police instructions and cooperate with restrictions to prevent panic.

One of the infected individuals is a nine-year-old boy, while the initial death on August 30 was initially attributed to liver cirrhosis comorbidity. However, the subsequent positive cases include the boy, who is in ICU, and his 24-year-old brother-in-law, detected on Tuesday.

Nipah Virus Claims Two Lives in Kozhikode, Two Undergoing Treatment:

Two additional individuals, including a nine-year-old boy, in Kerala’s Kozhikode district have tested positive for Nipah virus infection, according to State Health Minister Veena George’s announcement on Tuesday night. Out of seven blood samples sent for testing, three have returned positive results. Two of the infected individuals are currently receiving treatment, while one sadly passed away on Monday. Another person, who had contact with one of the infected individuals, also died on August 30, and it is suspected that Nipah might have been the cause. Health authorities have identified 168 people, including 127 healthcare professionals, who had contact with the infected individuals and have issued a mask-wearing directive for everyone in the district.

Among those who tested positive were a nine-year-old boy and his uncle. The boy’s father, a 40-year-old man who passed away recently, had also tested positive for the virus. The Health Minister, Veena George, who has been in Kozhikode since Tuesday morning to oversee the situation, assured the public that the situation is under control and being managed in accordance with established protocols.

On Tuesday morning, a person who died in Kozhikode due to fever and breathing difficulties on Monday had their sample test positive for the Nipah virus. In response to this development, a central team of officials from Delhi has been dispatched to Kozhikode.

The 40-year-old individual who tested positive for Nipah had come into contact with a relative last month. His relative developed a fever on August 22 and was admitted to a nearby hospital on August 25, subsequently passing away on August 30. Although the relative’s blood sample was not examined, it is presumed that Nipah might have been the cause.

This new case is approximately 15 kilometers away from the initial Nipah virus outbreak in southern India, first identified in Kozhikode in May 2018 and subsequently in 2021.

Nipah virus infection is primarily a zoonotic disease, capable of transmission from animals to humans, and it can also spread through contaminated food or direct contact.

Tomatoes Now Selling at Just Rs 4 Per Kg:

Just two months ago, tomato prices reached an astonishing Rs 200 per kilogram, creating a sense of scarcity and concern among consumers. However, this situation has taken a dramatic turn as tomato prices have now tumbled to a mere Rs 4 per kilogram. The sudden drop in prices can be attributed to a significant surplus of tomatoes flooding the market.

This unexpected price crash has brought immense distress to farmers, particularly in the Kurnool region of Andhra Pradesh. Faced with the daunting challenge of covering labor and transportation expenses, many farmers have resorted to a distressing practice known as “dumping.” In a desperate bid to alleviate their financial burdens, they have been compelled to dispose of their Vegetable crops in open areas.

The stark contrast between the previous high prices to the current rock-bottom rates has left both producers and consumers grappling with the volatility of Vegetable prices in the agricultural market. This pattern of extreme price fluctuations is a recurring occurrence, not only with tomatoes but also with another essential vegetable, onions.
